vid - Cylon Runner
Aug. 25th, 2008 06:37 pmvid title: Cylon Runner
audio: Blade Runner: The Final Cut trailer
source: Battlestar Galactica
duration: 1:06
summary: Faux Battlestar Galactica trailer using Blade Runner
notes: When planning out what I wanted to do with each of challenges, I knew I wanted to create a faux trailer for challenge 06 - hybrid. I've noticed a recurring cross-pollination among my interest in robots. Earlier this year I created a Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles vid, Does Cameron Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was a reference to the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the basis for Blade Runner.
Through conversations with other members of the community, it became apparent that Blade Runner was the obvious choice. Battlestar Galactica certainly owes a great deal to Blade Runner in terms of theme and idea. They both deal with implanted memories, vague questioning of being human, love, and other aspects. With the Cylon, they have their own culture, faith, justice, ideas, and history. They are not human, but what is so wonderful about being human? Why is it so important that we consider and question whether the Cylon are "more human than human"? As
beccatoria has mentioned, the difference between Battlestar Galactica and Blade Runner was the nature of the robots. For her, the existence of replicants never "clouded what it actually meant to be human". I thought about that for a bit because I agreed, yet I think that while the existence of robots don't always call the essence of humanity into question, they at least can make humanity question themselves.
I had almost completed the vid and was in need of static source. Everyone in The Know knows to go to
bradcpu for static source, but he was luckily out the door to VVC. I was still debating what to name the fake trailer.
projectjulie sent me a friend request on imeem, which then made me watch everything on her account. I found her season three BSG vblog in which she refers to an aspect of BSG, Cylon Runner, so Bang! there's my title.

Date: 2008-08-26 10:48 am (UTC)ANDERS IS TOTALLY RACHEL. NATALIE IS TOTALLY DECKARD. LIPSYNCHING!
I want to add a lot of deepness about the genius of using the final five: Anders and Tory especially as the experimental and off-the-reservation replicants; about using Natalie as Deckard, because of course, Deckard the Replicant is the most heavily telegraphed un-technically-revealed reveal in pop culture, and Natalie is so unrepentantly robotic but also so...different, but to be honest, I'm still stuck at "Screenplay by the Cylon God." SQUEE.
ETA: And ZOMG yes, the vlogs are just awesome sauce, right?

Date: 2008-08-29 01:27 am (UTC)man, I really need to rewatch Blade Runner. but even without a clear narrative frame of reference, THIS IS AMAZING. I especially adore the Hybrid's screams. Laura's surprise appearance made ME scream! I just keep watching it over and over because the story is so evocative and complex. HYBRID.
ALSO AHAHAHAHAHA YOU SEKRITLY WATCHED MY VLOG. two days, really? that's impressive. I'm so happy you loved it, because I am kind of absurdly attached and proud.
YOU HAVE KILLED ME.

Date: 2008-08-29 02:13 am (UTC)Tory is Roy Batty. No one can tell me differently. At least she's what Roy Batty could have been. Ok, she's Roy Batty with balls. In my head I can map out how the BSG world layers over Blade Runner.
I received the Final Cut edition of Blade Runner for last Christmas and I think it's the superior version. There are 5 versions, so that's saying something.
I adored the vlog. It's been a while since I've thought about season three so it was weird to think of it.
