vid title: Natalie Has Seen Things
audio: Blade Runner: The Final Cut
video source: Battlestar Galactica
duration: 1:09
summary: My elaboration on Natalie's death.
notes: challenge 09 - projection. In reply to [livejournal.com profile] heyiya's BSG meta and vid playlist, I was reminded of my own personal reading between Battlestar Galactica and Blade Runner. "[Lum's More Human Than Human] is part of what sparked my own obsession with the Cylon. Blade Runner was one of the first movies I remember watching as a child. I was so engaged by the ideas of "robots" as a child. The idea that they could be so similar to humans, but not be considered on the same level blew my young mind. So when I watched Lum's vid that used the White Zombie track that was based on Blade Runner, my love was crystallized." Within that same thread, we discussed the shared consciousness and individualism among the Cylon. I wanted to address many things within a short duration. One being that despite being in a different location, the Hybrid new when Natalie was shot. Rather transparently I wanted to show that without the ability to download, Natalie's memories and experience are lost to the collective. There are other vague references, but this is the most I've ever rambled in the notes of a vid post, so I'm stopping because there has to be room for expansion for the viewer.

download: divx, 10.1mb, stream/download from vimeo and sendspace

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-Beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those... moments will be lost... in time... like... tears... in rain. Time... to die.

Squeee robot intertextuality! I loved this - I found it very moving and reminiscent of what I was talking about in my post, of course. The loss of shared consciousness and mutuality that comes when the cylon move closer to humanity is as much the tragedy of Natalie's death as the loss of her life.

I have got to watch Blade Runner again - it's years since I've seen it! But I just caught up on Sarah Connor Chronicles and was really fascinated with the articulation between terminators and cylons - robots created by humanity and destroying it, etc. I want to think about that some more.

I did a Cameron of Sarah Connor Chronicles vid

Oh yay! Will watch that shortly. One of my fun-time tasks for this week is to finally go watch all the SCC vids and read the fic that kept passing me by while I was failing to watch the show... (I am hopelessly fannishly behind - this is actually pretty quick catchup for me, as witness the fact that it took me till 3 seasons had aired to watch BSG...)

OMG YOU MASHED UP CYLON RUNNER BSG AND BLADE RUNNER! I AM EVEN MORE IN LOVE WITH YOU NOW.

this is incredibly haunting and fascinating. "tears" made me gasp! and I adore the things you said about the connection between Natalie and the Hybrid and the pathos of losing her consciousness. it's such a rich tiny story!

btw, you might still be able to come to VVC if you can get to Chicago. I got in last night, so if there are any MORE last-minute cancellations or no-shows you could snag a spot. email llama.reg[at]gmail? *bats eyelashes*

OH MY GOD.

That was...absolutely fucking beautiful, dude. I am...I have that heart-hurt feeling in my chest. The editing was so simple, slow and beautiful. I've not used the word beautiful twice but no other adjective seems adequate.

That speech from Blade Runner has always, always been one of my favourite speeches ever. It's so heart-hurtingly beautiful, just like this vid. It's...everything, everything that Natalie's death should be.

I'm a little in love with you. I cannot, I just CAN'T express how much I love this. I have to go watch it again. It's criminal I somehow missed it on my flist for two days.

Wow.
